The projects submitted by students as part of the 14th edition of the UIC Barcelona Ceramics Chair was presented on 1 December. This year, the students focused their efforts on developing new applications for thin, large-format ceramic tiles.

The students presented the ceramic pieces they have been working on during the semester before a panel made up of Maximià Torruella, from the studio PMMT; Antonio Vaíllo, architect and founder of the studio Vaíllo Irigaray Arquitectos; Mar Esteve, director of Marketing for The Size; and Eva Pedrajas, a representative from ASCER; all accompanied by the Chair’s director, Dr Vicente Sarrablo, and lecturers Jordi Roviras and Cristina García Castelao.
The panel gave the three 2017 Ceramics Chair awards to the following projects:
Kay Curtis, for the project “Triatela”
For its capacity to generate shapes in a highly poetic manner. For being a system capable of presenting a wide range of architectural scenarios, while, at the same time, seamlessly integrating the inside and outside of the building through triangular pieces, which, stitched together using a simple system of plastic “hinges”, establish an elegant, precise and flexible continuous building envelope.
Antón Aluja, for the project “Aleveolith”
For being a systematic project that opens up new avenues for research in large-format laminated ceramic materials. A paradigmatic project, developed with a high level of precision and rigour, which brings new solutions to the market and emphasises the material’s properties while pushing them to the limit.
Héctor Muñoz, with “Inception”
For being a highly practical solution. From a manufacturing point of view, this straightforward idea has great potential for implementation in factory production systems and has innovative and immediate applications in the Architecture sector.
