Working in a constantly evolving sector presents both challenges and great opportunities: it forces you to adapt, innovate and explore new approaches to communication

Almudena Mesejo (Humanities, 2025) is building a career in the field of marketing and institutional relations at Rome Reports TV News, an international media outlet specialising in audiovisual journalism. Following a university experience shaped by teamwork, perseverance and a global perspective on communication, she has recently taken on the role of department director. In this interview, she reflects on her professional journey, the key lessons from her time at university, the skills required to work within an international communication environment and the challenges and opportunities of a constantly evolving sector.

  • Who is Almudena Mesejo? How would you describe yourself, and what motivates you in your daily life?

I am a very fortunate young woman who has been presented with great opportunities. I work in marketing and public relations and have recently become head of the department. I am a determined, proactive person with a strong desire to make the most of every opportunity that comes my way, both personally and professionally.

  • What lessons from your time at UIC Barcelona had the biggest impact on your professional development?

The importance of perseverance and the ability to provide solutions without getting stuck on the problem. I also learned how essential teamwork is and how meaningful synergies that enrich any project can be created through each person’s passions and knowledge.

  • Which skills or knowledge acquired during your time at university do you apply in your current role?

Communication, project management and a global perspective. Additionally, the ability to understand contexts and people, which is fundamental in communication, as it involves understanding how society works.

  • Which skills do you consider essential to pursue a career in marketing and institutional relations within the audiovisual sector?

Strategic vision, relational and institutional skills, the ability to adapt to clients, active listening and a commitment to staying constantly up-to-date in such a rapidly evolving sector as the audiovisual industry.

  • What challenges and opportunities come with working in communication at an international news outlet?

The main challenge lies in communicating with highly diverse audiences, with different cultural contexts and sensitivities, while maintaining coherence, credibility and journalistic rigour. At the same time, working in a constantly evolving sector presents both challenges and great opportunities: it forces you to adapt, innovate and explore new approaches to communication. This helps you develop a global perspective, engage with issues of international relevance and cooperate with high-level institutions and on projects within a demanding field that is in constant transformation.

  • An anecdote from your time as a student at UIC Barcelona: Without a doubt, the Catalan exam I took with my classmate Laura: I’m Galician and she’s Colombian, and we both had with a fairly limited level of Catalan. We accidentally made the examiners think that her roommate had gone missing, when what we actually meant was that she went home on weekends.
